It seems as if diesel cars are always in the news recently, due to the uncertainty surrounding the implementation of new regulations, taxes and even bans for some engines. This increased focus has led to demand falling for many of the new diesel models. As the number of diesels on our roads begins to fall, we take a look at some of the best cars with diesel engines over the last 30 years.
1. Peugeot 405 (Manufactured between 1988 and 1997) and the Citroën BX Turbo Diesel (Manufactured between 1982 and 1994)
These cars are the oldest to feature in our list and both featured the impressive XUD turbo-diesel engine, which was expertly designed by PSA Peugeot. At the time of manufacturing, both the 405 and BX were considered the most reliable diesel cars on the road. The cars quickly became popular with motorists across the country, due to their fuel efficiency and modern styling.
2. Austin Montego Countryman 2.0 D (Manufactured from 1984 to 1995)
At first, you might be surprised to find a Montego on this list, but these diesel cars are a treasured classic here in Great Britain. The Montegos were available with a variety of trims, but the Countryman was a truly ground-breaking design of the time. In a period of uncomfortable and boring designs, the Countryman became popular thanks to its soft, elegant features. The cars were fitted with a 2.0-litre Perkins engine, which provided great reliability and really stood the test of time.
3. Land Rover Discovery 300 Tdi (Manufactured between 1984 and 1995)
This list wouldn’t be complete without a 4×4, so our pick is the first-generation Land Rover Discovery. As soon as this car hit the road it was seen as a luxury option for farmers and those living in the country. Although many Land Rover fans may argue that the 200 Tdi model is the best, we believe the 300-series just pips it to the post, with its quieter drive and refined features. For motorists looking for a large, tough diesel which was able to cope with challenging drives, this car provided great reliability.
4. BMW 640d M Sport (Manufactured from 2011)
For drivers who are passionate about luxury, performance cars the M Sport BMWs have always been popular. The 640d M is considered by many as the best of the range, as it is one of the most fuel-efficient diesel performance cars. Surprisingly, the 640d will return over 50mpg, which is an impressive figure given the car’s position in the sports-car pace section.
5. Audi A4 1.9 TDi PD (Manufactured from 2001 to 2004)
Audi shares many of its engines with other popular car brands such as Skoda, Seat and Volkswagen. This particular model featured the renowned VAG engine, which was fast, reliable and extremely fuel efficient. As soon as the car hit showrooms, its stylish exterior and luxury features quickly turned it into a very popular vehicle. The car is still highly sought-after on the roads today, with a strong used car market.
